Steel Decarbonization Webinar

World Steel Dynamics is hosting a two-part webinar series on March 19th and 20th.

Theme:  “Express lanes, under construction, and fork in the road ahead: signposts on the steel industry’s road to decarbonization.”

March 19:  10am – 11am ET/3pm – 4pm CET

Presenters:

John Lichtenstein, Managing Partner, World Steel Dynamics

Topic:  Steel decarbonization: are we on track? Are we pulling the right levers?

The IEA’s 2020 groundbreaking “Iron and Steel Technology Roadmap” and subsequent updates have laid out potential paths for the industry to reach NetZero Emissions (NZE) by 2050 with carbon capture (CCUS), green hydrogen, and molten iron electrolysis highlighted. A sober assessment suggests that the timelines for these “solutions” are likely to be longer than originally forecast. WSD expects significant decarbonization progress in the coming decades, but it may not be enough to meet the 2050 NZE targets.

Timothy Van Audenaerde, Managing Director, Global Metals Lead, Accenture

Topic:  The steel industry is investing massively in new assets, in order to achieve 2050 targets. A total enterprise reinvention is needed if the steel industry wants to be competitive.

  • We see that steel manufacturers are mainly focused on the asset itself -what furnace or DRI to buy – but less on the other drivers, crucial to run those new assets at a competitive cost. A total enterprise reinvention is needed if the steel industry wants to be competitive:
  • We see therefore a need to have a clear approach on following elements:
    • Technology: OT/IT, Data, … including the quality, OEE etc.)
    • People
    • Cost (incl. Energy)

Moderator:  Phillip Englin, Chief Executive Officer, World Steel Dynamics

March 20: 10am – 11am ET/3pm – 4pm CET

Presenters:

John Lichtenstein, Managing Partner, World Steel Dynamics

Topic:  The global steel industry’s three speed decarbonization progress

Major differences are emerging in the rates at which different regions are decarbonizing their steel industries with the advanced economies, China, and the rest of the world proceeding on divergent trajectories.  Key reasons include differences in obsolete scrap reservoirs and iron ore resources, energy sources and costs, customer requirements, and government priorities and policies, especially as they relate to carbon taxation.  This has profound implications for overall industry decarbonization. It also turns up heat on the industry’s perennial trade (scrap and steel) and excess capacity battles.  Finally, it spotlights the steel industry as a conspicuous example: the global North/South climate change divides tension.

Nicole Voigt, Managing Director & Partner, BCG

Topic: “Are Consumers Open to Paying More for Decarbonized Products?”

When discussing decarbonization, most people talk about the emissions released during a product’s use. Yet this focus overlooks a significant source of environmental impact: the production phase. To address production-phase emissions, all companies along a product’s value chain—including raw material suppliers and manufacturers, suppliers across all tiers, and OEMs—must understand consumers’ willingness to pay for decarbonization.
